Where are you from?
♥ James Baldwin.
Reminds me of my first job in Charleston, where a blue-eyed, fourth or fifth generation Charlestonian asked me, “Where are you from?” I said I was from Los Angeles. He kept asking. I said I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I grew up there, went to school there. He kept probing. Finally, I said, “My father is from the Philippines, if that’s what you’re asking, but where is your family from?” He was rebuffed by my question, but my answer satisfied him. He thus went into spiel in how much he liked Filipino women, saying, “You know, I like Filipinas. They’re beautiful, naive, and innocent, not like these American women, who demand too much.”
